For Your SoCal Tap Water member agencies, delivering safe and reliable water to your tap is our top priority. That’s why we take pride in sharing the results of our on-going water testing and compare data to state and federal safety standards. Every year, your water’s quality is documented in Consumer Confidence Reports produced by each agency to give you a clear look at what’s in your water and reaffirm our commitment to providing dependable tap water for our region.
What is a Consumer Confidence Report?
Water agencies in California are required by the State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water to create and distribute a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) on an annual basis. The report provides an annual snapshot of the quality of water, including where it originated (e.g. groundwater or imported), breakdown of minerals and any possible contaminants.
As noted above, CCRs also measure your water quality against state and federal safety standards, ensuring it meets stringent guidelines for health and safety. It’s designed to keep you informed about what’s flowing from your tap, so you can feel confident about the water you drink every day. These same reports are shared with regulating agencies.
Why should I read my water agency’s report?
CCRs are an easy way for you to stay informed about your water quality and understand where your water comes from before it arrives at your home or businesses. Every provider has a different water source portfolio, but by looking into your water’s source, you’ll have a more complete picture of how and from how far your water travels to you. This foundational information is, of course, in addition to detailed data of the minerals contained in your water. Your water provider tests and treats water to ensure its quality, and the data showcased in a CCR shares the specific makeup of your water. They are intended to be a transparent, behind-the-scenes look into your area’s water.
What specific information is included in a report?
While reports vary slightly from agency to agency, there are some data points that are consistent:
- Water quality tables that outline standards for natural minerals and manmade compounds or contaminants
- Service area details that highlight the specifics of a service area and data points like how many samples are collected across how many sites
- Health information about specific minerals or compounds like lead and copper
Taking the time to review your water agency’s CCR is key to understanding the quality of your tap water and reassuring you that it meets applicable standards. Your SoCal Tap Water member agencies are committed to proactively educating you and answering any questions, providing transparency and peace of mind about the water you rely on each and every day.
