As families and friends gather around the dinner table to reflect on what they’re thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday, don’t forget to raise a glass in honor of our region’s tap water. Tap water is a silent supporter of our daily activities, and while it’s easy to take for granted, we think this season is the perfect time to pause on all that safe, clean and reliable water gives to us all.
Enjoy your morning cup of coffee? Tap water was there to extract the flavor of the coffee beans. Or how about your tasty overnight oats you prepped for a nutritious start to your day? Tap water was there too. Oh, and the reuseable water bottle you take with you when you’re thirsty? Tap water makes that more than just an empty promise of refreshment. These are just very few simple examples of how integrated tap water is in our daily routines. Tap water is an essential piece of our being and we must honor its value by using it.
Your SoCal Tap Water member agencies work diligently to deliver water services to you, and in most cases your tap water travels a long way to you. And just like guests that might traveling to the Santa Ana River Watershed to visit this holiday season, your tap water is ready to help you celebrate.
It is clean and safe to consume around the clock, and while we rigorously work in the background, we want to acknowledge and appreciate all the science, staff and safety standards that make our water delivery systems the unsung hero of our day-to-day lives…24/7/365 with no exceptions.
Every drop is treated, tested and delivered right to you tap, so no matter what happens at dinner, you can trust that your water will be at its best.
The reliable access to clean and dependable drinking water (on demand, we might add) is a privilege that must not be taken for granted. Tap water is a natural precious resource that we can’t live without…literally, and for that we are thankful.
Speaking of being thankful, let’s quickly tap into why Thanksgiving would be impossible without water! Aside from the water used to cook a Thanksgiving meal, sometimes we overlook that even more water is used to grow and nurture your favorite Thanksgiving ingredients. Let’s look a little closet at some approximations of typical Thanksgiving water usage compiled by Lehigh County Authority in 2018, stats which could be even higher today:
• One 16 oz. serving of a roasted turkey uses 264 gallons of water
• One 8 oz. serving of mashed potatoes uses 24 gallons of water
• One 0.5 oz. serving of stuffing uses 8 gallons of water
• One 1 oz. serving of dinner rolls uses 14 gallons of water
• One 8 oz. serving of cranberry sauce uses 17 gallons of water
• One 6 oz. serving of pumpkin pie uses 12 gallons of water
Clearly, it takes a lot of water to make Thanksgiving meals a reality, so today, let’s cheers to water. It hydrates, sustains and inspires more than we know.
