Boosting Your Health with Tap Water

May is our favorite month because during the first week of May water agencies and professionals across the nation celebrate National Drinking Water Week. It’s our chance to celebrate the integral role that water, our most precious natural resource, plays in our daily lives.

You might not stop to think about how many times you use water every day, but we sure do. From the sink to the shower, we ensure that every drop is safe, reliable and up to the standards you’ve come to depend on each day.

The list is endless, and to celebrate National Drinking Water Week with the American Water Works Association and other water agencies and professionals, we’re going to fill your cup with some health benefits of drinking tap water.

#1 Tap water keeps us hydrated and the earth clean.

Drinking tap water every day nourishes our bodies by keeping us hydrated throughout the day. Choosing tap water as your go-to beverage also reduces the negative environmental impacts of bottled water by reducing plastic waste. A not-so-fun fact is that plastic water bottles can take several decades to decompose, which is something to think about next time you toss one. Instead, consider using a refillable water canteen with tap water. It’s fresh and so clean.

#2 Tap water improves oral hygiene.

Safe levels of naturally occurring minerals, like fluoride, are added to tap water to improve dental hygiene and prevent cavities. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), water with fluoride can minimize tooth decay and reduce the development of cavities. This means you not only have stronger teeth, but hopefully, you’ll have fewer cavities, which will save you pain in more ways than one.

#3 Tap water is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

To ensure tap water is healthful and safe to drink, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets strict regulations and standards for water quality and water testing. While the EPA protects human health by identifying the safe legal limits of contaminants, Your SoCal Tap Water member agencies work diligently to meet or exceed these water quality standards to deliver safe and clean tap water to your homes.

There are so many more reasons to use and drink tap water every day. But let’s not forget about the important work of local water agencies and professionals who utilize advanced water treatment and testing technologies to make sure your tap is safe and clean around the clock.
