Water Conservation – Every Drop Counts

Water conservation is no foreign concept to Southern California residents, given previous drought experiences. It’s a concept that many water agencies across the state advocate to secure the future of the region’s water supply. The U.S. Drought Monitor publishes a weekly map to track drought data. Though Southern California has varying drought levels, it is always important to conserve water because it’s a natural resource that needs TLC year-round. If you haven’t already, take a look at our previous blog, tapping into tips and tricks to increase water efficiency both indoors and outdoors.

While you’re conserving water on the home front, Your SoCal Tap Water member agencies save water through different plans, programs, and infrastructure to achieve a resilient water supply.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you might be familiar with the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), a partnership between Orange County Water District (OCWD) and Orange County Sanitation District (OC San). This advanced water purification system takes highly treated wastewater and purifies it to create dependable and safe drinking water.

Western Water has a Water Shortage Contingency PlanWater Shortage Contingency Plan (WSCP) that helps the agency stay prepared—whether it’s a drought or another issue affecting water supply. The plan lays out clear steps to manage water use when supplies are low. It includes six water shortage stages and outlines how Western works to reduce demand, prevent waste, and make sure there’s enough water for essential needs.

It’s all part of being ready, no matter what the forecast looks like.

Inland Empire Utilities Agency and Eastern Municipal Water District both provide recycled water programs – a critical strategy to supervise water conservation efforts. Recycled water efforts also minimize the dependence on imported water supplies. Nothing better than reuse and recycle, right?

While we’re doing our part in conserving our water supply, we appreciate your efforts at home and in the yard. We encourage you to continue your water conservation practices every day to make every drop count, as this can help save water and money!
